Doss Community

Doss, Texas is a small farming and ranching community in Gillespie County with the population accelerating during the whitetail deer and turkey hunting season.  Doss is located 19 miles Northwest of Fredericksburg, and 14 miles Northeast of Harper.

Fishing and swimming are enjoyed in the spring-fed streams in the community.

Our Saint Peter Lutheran Church members (some third and fourth generations of the founders) are dedicated to the growth of our congregation, taking pride in our church buildings, grounds and cemetery.

History

St. Peter Lutheran Church is located 23 miles northwest of Fredericksburg, Texas, in the picturesque Doss Valley, a rural community settled in the mid-1800s. Our congregation was founded in 1896 when the pioneers (mostly German Lutherans) saw the need for people of faith to have a place to worship. With more and more families homesteading in this beautiful Hill Country, a magnificent, native stone sanctuary was completed in 1913.

Because of the growing families and the vital continuation of Christian education, a large, split-level Parish Hall was built in 1947. The building contains a modern kitchen, office, Adult Sunday School Class and Children’s Sunday School Class areas and rest rooms.

St. Peter Lutheran Church Congregation

Our congregation welcomes all the peoples in the community and surrounding areas by scheduling special, interfaith services, always well-attended and resulting in a feeling of unity and fellowship. The members of St. Peter Lutheran Church have had a rich legacy of faith and tradition for over a century and with the privilege of living in God’s Grace, look forward with joy and anticipation to the future.  Our sister congregation is Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Pastor Clint Begins Pastorate Jan. 5

Beginning Sunday, January 5, the Rev. Clint Pluenneke will begin his pastorate at St. Peter Lutheran Church, and will replace Pastor David Priem whose last regular Sunday was Dec. 29.

Priem has been named lead pastor at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, effective Wednesday, Jan. 1, and will replace the Rev. Bobby Vitek who is retiring.  Pastor David was installed at St. Peter Lutheran Church on July 10, 2022.

During a called congregational meeting on Sunday, Dec. 8, the congregation of St. Peter Lurthean Church voted to call Pluenneke as pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church, starting Jan. 1, 2025, and approved his salary package.  They also received a verbal resignation of Pastor David’s call.

Pastor Clint has Sauer family roots in the Doss Valley.  In fact, the land on which St. Peter Lutheran Church was built was originally Sauer land.

A new worship schedule with St. Paul Lutheran Church at Cave Creek will be started on Sunday, January 5, as Pastor Clint is also pastor over at St. Paul Lutheran and will be traveling between the two churches on Sundays.

St. Peter Lutheran and St. Paul Lutheran churches are members of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church faily.

Service times at St. Peter Luthran will be similar to when the church traded service times with Chirst Lutheran Church at Cherry Spring over the years.

Every other Sunday, we will have early church…every other Sunday, late church.

So, on 1st and 3rd Sundays, Doss will have church at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday School at 10:15 a.m.

On 2nd and 4th Sundays, church will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday School will be held beforehand at 9:30 a.m.

On months with five Sundays, the two churches will rotate times.  The first time for that will be in March when Doss will have late church.  For fifth Sundays, Doss will have early church on even months and late church on odd months.

One Sunday a month, Pastor Clint will lead worship at Holy Ghost, and then one of the other Holy Ghost Pastors will lead our worship service.
