Happy New You!
January invites reflection – a new calendar, a fresh page, and often a list of resolutions: eat better, do more, try harder. Yet for Christians, the New Year brings us back to something far simpler and far better: the promises of Jesus Christ.
Scripture shows us this in the story of Naaman (2 Kings 5). A powerful and respected commander, Naaman suffered from leprosy. When the prophet Elisha told him to wash in the Jordan River, it seemed too simple, even offensive. But when Naaman trusted God’s word and entered the water, he came out renewed – his life changed not by his own strength, but by God’s promise.
The New Year works much the same way. God does not give us self-improvement plans or spiritual resolutions to keep. He gives new life.
In Holy Baptism, we are washed not in the Jordan, but in God’s Word and promise. Through what seems ordinary – water, Word, bread, and wine – God does something profound.
For Christians, the New Year proclaims a new you given by grace: forgiven, re-newed, restored, alive in Christ.
As this year begins, hear the promise again: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
