As the church season of Epiphany draws to a close this month, we wrap up by remembering that Epiphany is a season of revelation, recognition, and rejoicing in Jesus!
In response, on Sunday, Feb. 8, we will hear in our Gospel reading (Matthew 5:13-20) that Jesus calls us the light of the world, reminding us that we now reflect His light as we live in faith and share His love with others.
Then on Sunday, Feb. 15, Epiphany reaches its climax on a mountain with the glorious Transfiguration of Christ blazing bright (Matthew 17:1-9).
However, Jesus must then descend and begin His journey to the cross. In the same way, we also come down from the mountain and begin the next season of the Church Year – Lent.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, and this year St. Peter, Doss, will be hosting an Ash Wednesday service, which alternates each year between St. Peter and St. Paul, Cave Creek.
This year our Lenten theme is “Stretched: From Cross to Crown.”
Throughout our regular Sunday services, extra Wednesday services (March 4 and March 18), and Maundy Thursday service (April 2), we will follow Jesus as He is stretched in the wilderness, in suffering, in love, and on the cross, so that we might be stretched into new and everlasting life through Him!
As the psalmist says, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!'” (Psalm 122:1)
Peace,
Pastor Clint
