A Sunday School teacher held up a picture of Moses coming down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments in his hands. One little child looked carefully at the picture and asked, Why is Moses carrying two iPads?!”
Well, they were certainly tablets – but not the kind that need charging, updating, or a Wi-Fi connection! They were tablets bearing the very words of God.
And unlike so many messages that flash across our screens and quickly disappear, these words are still worth hearing, learning, and taking to heart.
During the month of June, we will begin walking through the Ten Commandments one by one. These were words spoken by the God who had already rescued His people from slavery.
“I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself,” He told them (Exodus 19:4) – and then He called them to live as His own. They are words that show us what it means to live in relationship with God and in love toward one another.
Moses told God’s people, “Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today…. For it is no empty word for you, but your very life” (Deuteronomy 32:46-47). Yes, they show us where we fall short. But they also lead us again to the God who saves sinners through Jesus Christ and gives us new life by His grace.
So, look forward to seeing you on Sundays, as we ask Luther’s favorite question: “What does this mean?”
